A minimum of 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
