Social Media Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Worries

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Service Response and Material Removal

Based on the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or administering at home.

After moments of entering one group, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of purchases occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these groups, messages display dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled pens typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a injector should be used, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Measures

A representative for Telegram stated it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind this drug is sound, these digital products may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to current price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has already encountered individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
