In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
