The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
