WHO Raises Warning Over Severe Lack of Obesity Injections

Under one in 10 patients that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its first advice on the therapies.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

According to projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance recognises that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and lifelong treatment," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to widespread access to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing substantial weight, explains the agency.

Despite the current best projected outlook, the manufacturing of these medications might only reach about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The advice urges nations and manufacturers to increase access, by measures like voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the core component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

How Obesity Jabs Function

GLP-1 drugs imitate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and increase feelings of fullness so users eat less.

Patients typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Evidence suggests users may regain a significant portion after a year of stopping the treatment, because their usual appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese elevates your likelihood for developing diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and specific cancers.

Obesity impacts individuals in all nations and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
